Gold medals aren't really made of gold. They're made of sweat, hard work, and a hard to find alloy called guts.

Knights Coaches Trained in Iowa
On Friday October 26, 2007 Knights coach’s Steve Kenyeri and Bob McCaffrey traveled to Iowa City, Iowa
for the annual University of Iowa Coach’s Clinic. The clinic was a 3-hour event in the Dan Gable Wrestling
Complex in Carver-Hawkeye Arena. There were approximately 45 coaches in attendance, some from as far
away as Colorado Springs, Colorado.
The evening began with a welcoming by Iowa Head Coach and Olympic Champion Tom Brands. Coach
Brands outlined the evening and gave the coaches an update on the national team that is training for the
Olympics, as well as, his thoughts on upcoming Hawkeye season.
The clinic began with John Oostendorp a former Hawkeye heavyweight wrestler, All-American, and current
Head Coach at Coe College, Cedar Rapids, Iowa. Coach Oostendorp showed techniques and reviewed a
variety of different moves. The main emphasis of his presentation was the philosophical and mental side of
the sport. He talked about developing a team philosophy, but remembering to coach the individuals. He
stressed “removing doubt” from your wrestlers head and coaching the wrestler to “always look to score”.
The second half of the evening was instructed by Dave Hoffman, a former All-American from Virginia Tech
and currently an Assistant Coach at Bucknell University in Pennsylvania.
Coach Hoffman’s session was very technical and he covered all three of the main wrestling positions
(Neutral, Top, and Bottom). He emphasized the basics and the importance of practice and drilling. He was
an expert on his feet and taught “If you can take people down and you know how to escape, you cannot
lose”.
Both coaches shared the wisdom and experience of Division I College wrestling and coaching with a group
of eager high school coaches that included our coaches, the only Kid’s Club Coaches in attendance.
Wrestling legend Dan Gable was present but did not speak to the group. He did, however take the time to
have his picture taken with Coach Steve and Coach Brands. The evening concluded with Coach Brands
thanking everyone for attending and talked about the importance of “being able to score from anywhere,
any time”.
Knights Wrestlers and Dads Go to Camp

well-balanced approach. We combine intense training, competition, recreation, and character training from
a biblical perspective in the beautiful setting of Northern Wisconsin." There were three wrestling sessions a
but others with a wealth of wrestling experience. Perhaps the highlight of the three days was the day. In
between the wrestling sessions there was plenty to do for Camp of Champs is more than a wrestling camp.
It was many outdoor activities to include fishing, kayaking, tennis, archery, mini-golf, of a Frisbee golf, a BB
gun range, hiking, and more. On Friday night many of the wrestlers and their fathers hiked into the wood
for an overnight camping trip which included roasting marshmallow, sharing ghost stories, and telling jokes.
The wrestling sessions included instruction from not only the Peterson brothers, but others with a wealth of
wrestling experience. Perhaps the highlight of the three days was the www.campofchamps.org or ask

Gable. Coach Gable went over the "getting out or ask Coach Bob, Coach Joe, or Coach George.of a head
lock" and being in "better shape than your opponent". He said that he would get into such good Bob,
Coach Joe, or Coach George.wrestling shape that he knew he would not get tired during a match. What an
advantage over an opponent! Later on Saturday night Coach Gable had a question and answer session
with the entire camp. If there is any interest in next years camp you can check out the web site:
